Lead On: How Boards Govern AI
Sep 15, 2027
08:00 AM

As executives, Forum members are leading their organizations through the adoption of AI. In the boardroom, the role is fundamentally different: directors must oversee strategy, risk, and leadership rather than direct the work themselves.

In this in-person briefing, directors from nonprofit, private, and public company boards will examine how their boards are approaching AI, what questions they are asking of management, and how oversight differs across sectors. Participants will gain a practical understanding of the distinction between management and governance, one of the most important adjustments for any new director.

This briefing also serves as a natural introduction for members considering the November 2027 Pathway to the Boardroom program.

Key takeaways

  • The distinction between managing an issue and providing strategic oversight of it
  • The questions effective boards are asking management about AI strategy, risk, and talent
  • How sector and ownership structure shape the board's approach
  • Practical guidance for applying an oversight mindset in a first boardroom
